The deeper the passion for the cause, the greater the impact you are able to make. My connection to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer started because of Tau Kappa Epsilon and has manifested into a consistent commitment, a desire to inspire and a passion to do more.
In 2014, the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity made a commitment to support the (then) “St. Jude Give Thanks. Walk.” events being held around the country. Danny Thomas, the founder of the hospital, is a member of the fraternity.
In support of this fraternity initiative, I coordinated with undergraduates from Susquehanna University to create a team and start fundraising for the Central Pennsylvania event in Harrisburg, PA as “Susquehanna TKE”.
I knew very little about St. Jude at the time and this was the first philanthropic walk I had ever truly committed to fundraising for. I looked at the fundraising levels from prior years. I looked at the goals individual walkers and teams were setting. I said, “I can do a little more.” I set a goal of raising $1,000 and committed that I would buzz my head if I hit the goal.
